Family Rules

Ever since I saw this, I've wanted to somehow display the rules we have for our family. I've been thinking on it for a while. (Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas.) This is the list I went with:

I printed out these six statements that I thought encompassed the respectful, considerate behavior we encourage in our family. Then I just slipped them into some 5x7 frames (from Ikea) to coordinate with the others we have in the hall, and hung the set right outside the kids' bedrooms.

My goal was to positively display the expectations we have. I also wanted them to be fun and easy to read. I figure we can refer to them and visit them as needed throughout the day. My friend, Angel, even suggested to use it as a subtle reminder, "Remember what the blue rule says." I like that application too. And apparently the bright colors are taking the edge off of the rules because my daughter commented how "pretty" they are on our wall. Let's see if she's so smitten with them as to remember to "Use kind words and a pleasant tone" with her brother today. We'll see...

I recently expanded my shop to include some printable things, so I thought I'd make these available over there as well. Hope your Tuesday is grand... Mine should be, as I'm sure my little ones are going to have spot on behavior! Ha!

So far, our family rules include: 1. don't get out of bed 2. Don't take your pants off, and 3. Don't say bad words. I'll have to think of some different, more classy rules before I display them on the wall. :)

But I love, love this idea. I think it turned out beautifully!

Oh Erin, I love these! I was so inspired by Aimee's post awhile back too, but somehow never got around to doing one myself. I did, however, find a "Golden Rule" poster at the thrift store for $1 that I bought and hung inside the pantry (a door my daughter frequently opens-ha!). I had been really trying to hit that idea home to her lately and was stoked when I found the poster. Gonna go tweet about this for you-since I am kind of still on a blog break ;) Have a great day!

I love this! What great words to remind us regularly how to be better people. We all need the nudge to stop and think. It seems so many children are not taught to respect others, and this is very sad. The world is a much nicer place to live when we all treat others the way we like being treated. You're a great mother!!!

Great idea! I love the simplicity of it, but also the colorful cheerful way of approaching it. The word "rules" tend to have a negative affect on some, so I think this is great.

Fabulous display. Do you think "I will not dip my cracker in the cat's water" would look good framed?
