Okay, so it's the talk of the town around here: School is starting in less than a week. There seem to be two schools of thought on this. One is I'm- so-sad-summer-is-over-and-I-have-to-send-my-kids-off-to-school-so-soon, and the other is I-can't-wait-until-the-kids-are-back-in-school.
I'm straddling the fence on this one. While I really do hate to have to share my daughter with the school for most of our day (7 flipping hours!), I have to admit that I'm wearing a bit thin over here. It's beginning to feel a lot like the days just after Christmas. The magical glow of the season seems to fade for us just after Santa leaves the scene. It's about this time the the kids start acting all too entitled, and those formally cheery decorations are beginning to drive me batty. The atmosphere around here right now is scarily getting to feel somewhat reminiscent of this.
My daughter has been rolling out of bed asking, "what are we going to do today?" before her feet even hit the ground. At the beginning of the summer this same question was met with my enthusiasm for all the possibilities. Well, folks, that enthusiasm is wavering. I'm finding myself somewhat annoyed (sad, but kinda true). My effort to combat this potential downward spiral was to have my gal make a list of the things she'd like to do during her last week of summer vacation. I got the idea from here, here and here. (I think I'll try to do this with the kids at the beginning of summer next year.) I was surprised by how simple and doable her suggestions all were. This plan rejuvenated us all and we're definitely more excited and intentional with our few remaining days.
Here's our progress:
How are you holding up as the summer is nearing its end?
Oh, what about my spending hiatus, you ask? Yeah, Target got me and I came home with $75 worth of clothing for myself. Tags still on. Deliberating as to what to keep and what to take back. Full disclosure next week.

one week from today.
i am counting down the minutes...
xo
Our summer has ended so we are back into routine mode in which I thrive off of.
That is a great list! And a great idea...
Yes a wonderful list. I can't believe summer is already over. Too bad school doesn't start after Labor Day. Enjoy the last couple of days. xoxo
I don't even have kids, and I'm counting down the days. I'll finally be able to take an afternoon off work and go to the movies without it being overrun by teenagers. I can got to Wal Mart on my lunch break and not stand in a line full of little kids begging their moms for cookies (don't gte me wrong, I love kids; I just have my moments).
My four-day countdown has begun. I'm not too happy about it, either!
You're one fabulous mommy lady. I hope I can come up with ways to keep my kiddos entertained like that when the time comes!
I understand your train of thought. My thoughts are a combination of I-can't-believe-my-son-is-starting-kindergarten-already and Let's-just-get-it-over-with-already! (I'm tired of stressing over it!)
I took the kids to the zoo on Monday, because I realized it was my last chance to do it. It was a fun adventure for the 3 of us. : )
We still have a few weeks to go before school starts, but we're feeling almost a pressure to squeeze in a last few fun things to do before the end of the season - one last camping trip, one last trip to the lake, get to the petting zoo...
We do the list thing too, at the beginning of the summer. Here's ours:

I know how you feel! It is definitely a combination of emotions over here as well.
I feel satisfied that we had a great, fun-filled summer, however. I think we are all ready for a change of pace.
i don't have children but i can empathize with the need for a little change. you idea about the ideas is fantastic and it allows her to take some ownership over the plans too. you're so smart!
ok- so i read your list! Lets have a picnic together all the kids?!!! so fun! what day are you free??? XO
Funny thing is I was one of those on the side of wanting summer to last forever until today. It is too hot out to play outside so I am going insane in a little house with 4 kids and a mess everywhere. Feelin the pain but I do think those lists would work beautifully. xo
How funny, your list sounds exactly like my summer up until the time the kids went back to school a week ago, seriously! And me, I'm kinda on the fence too. But my boys seem really glad to be back to school. Although the mornings are another story. ;0)
I think after a long summer with the kiddos you have earned the clothes (speaking of entitlement!). Looking forward to hearing who Kate will have for first grade. See you tonight!
what an awesome idea! I lover her list and I love that it energized you and you all will have so much fun together! My kids already started school and I'm missing the summer fun !
totally cracking up at your TARGET purchases....can't wait to see them.....I'm getting ready to go raid the clothing section as well;)
